Hormone Replacement TherapyFor Men & Women
What is HRT?
Aging is a natural process controlled by our endocrine and immune systems. As these systems decline in function so do we. Research has shown that maintaining and balancing our hormone levels and boosting our immune system naturally can prevent debility and illness. HRT simply refers to figuring out which hormones are deficient, and restoring them back to an effective balance.
Why is hormone balance important?
Replacing diminished hormones such as Thyroid, DHEA, Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone in men and women can not only slow the aging process but also the occurrence of chronic diseases such as fatigue, diabetes, high cholesterol, osteoporosis and heart disease. The more obvious effects of hormones are increased strength and vitality, freedom from hot flashes, weight loss, improved memory and libido, prevention of chronic illnesses and pain syndromes. Pure Health and Wellness offers the choice of Natural and Synthetic Hormone Therapy Replacement for our patients in a variety of modalities: oral, topical, injections and pellets. Natural hormones are biologically identical in chemical structure to our body’s hormones. They are typically derived from plants and compounded at special compounding pharmacies. Synthetic hormones are made by pharmaceutical companies and are not chemically identical to our body’s hormones. In our consultation, we will assess your needs and discuss the advantages of each.
What is the procedure for HRT?
The procedure begins with a standard patient intake and physical exam, routine blood work focusing on hormones, a return visit to the doctor’s office for blood work interpretation and a treatment plan. The treatment plan consists of a series of injections, insertion of pellets or topicals of the deficient hormone or hormones, and then blood work is done again to see where the levels are at.
Hormone optimization is key to healthy aging. Prevent heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, dementia and feel and look great too with optimal hormone balance. What happens to our hormones as we age?
Women go through a process called “menopause”, where they lack the production of Estrogen and/or Progesterone. Estrogen (Estrodiol/E2) is the main female steroid hormone, which normally is balanced with the correct production of Progesterone. When menopause sets in and Estrogen levels decrease, women are at risk for many potential problems. These problems consist of increased stress on the cardiovascular system and the musculoskeletal system.
- Cardiovascular System: As the steroid hormone production decreases, so does the metabolism of fats, leading to more fats in the blood. This increases the risk of arteriosclerosis (fatty deposits in arteries), which can lead to coronary artery disease and strokes.
- Musculoskeletal System: The decrease in steroid hormones can affect the musculoskeletal system by accelerating bone loss leading to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is where the bones become porous from the decrease in bone mineral density (BMD). The decrease in BMD can very easily lead to bone fractures, which is a very common problem in aging women.
Men also go through a similar process called “andropause”, where they have a decline in the production of Testosterone and/or Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). For men, the process typically has a much later onset, although andropause in younger men seems to be a current trend. The signs and symptoms for men going through andropause are loss of libido (sex drive), depression, poor memory and concentration, nervousness, fatigue and insomnia.
